This is a heat engine (Carnot engine) diagram; its efficiency is η = 1 − Q2/Q1 = 1 − T2/T1, and with T1 = 373 K, T2 = 273 K, Q1 = 4200 J, the rejected heat Q2 works out to about 3074 J.

a) The efficiency of a heat engine is defined as the ratio of work output to heat input:

η = W/Q1 = (Q1 − Q2)/Q1 = 1 − Q2/Q1

For an ideal (Carnot) engine, this can also be written in terms of the reservoir temperatures:

η = 1 − T2/T1

b) The working substance of the device (a Carnot engine) undergoes a cycle of four reversible processes:

  1. Isothermal expansion (at temperature T1, absorbing heat Q1 from the hot reservoir)
  2. Adiabatic expansion (temperature falls from T1 to T2, no heat exchange)
  3. Isothermal compression (at temperature T2, rejecting heat Q2 to the cold reservoir) …
