Fayol's principles described:

  • (a) Division of work: Work should be divided into small, specialised tasks and assigned to different persons. Repeatedly doing the same task makes a person an expert, improving efficiency, speed and accuracy. It applies to both managerial and technical work.
  • (b) Unity of direction: Each group of activities having the same objective should have one head and one plan. For example, all marketing activities should be guided by one marketing plan under one marketing head, ensuring unity of action and coordination.
  • (c) Scalar chain: There should be a formal line of authority running from the highest to the lowest rank in a straight line. Communication should normally follow this chain. In an emergency, two employees at the same level may communicate directly through a shortcut called the 'gang plank', informing their superiors afterwards. …
