Part (a): Scalar chain sets a formal line of authority (with the gang plank), equity ensures fair treatment, and initiative encourages employees to take the lead.

Part (a) Principles of General Management

Henri Fayol gave fourteen principles of general management. Three of them are:

  1. Scalar Chain. Fayol defined the scalar chain as the chain of superiors ranging from the highest authority to the lowest rank. Communication should ordinarily flow along this line so that authority and responsibility remain clear. To avoid delay, Fayol suggested a short-cut called the 'gang plank', which permits two employees at the same level in different departments to communicate directly, provided their superiors are informed and approve. This maintains the chain while allowing quick contact.
  2. Equity. This principle requires that managers treat their subordinates with kindness, fairness and justice. There should be no discrimination on grounds of caste, religion, sex or language. A sense of fairness in rules, rewards and discipline wins the loyalty and devotion of employees. …
