Alien DNA (a gene of interest) needs to be delivered into a host cell to create a genetically modified organism. While vectors (such as plasmids, bacteriophages or Agrobacterium) are commonly used, DNA can also be introduced directly by physical methods:
Micro-injection: In this method, the desired/recombinant DNA is directly injected into the nucleus of an animal cell using an extremely fine glass micro-needle/micropipette under a microscope. This method is widely used to introduce DNA into animal cells, for example in producing transgenic animals (a foreign gene is injected into the pronucleus of a fertilised egg, which is then implanted into a surrogate mother).
