Detritivores feed on detritus and physically break it into smaller pieces, kick-starting the process of decomposition in an ecosystem; an earthworm is a common example.

(a) What are detritivores: Detritivores (also called detritus feeders) are organisms that consume detritus — the dead remains of plants and animals along with faecal matter — as their food source. By ingesting and fragmenting detritus, they increase the surface area available for microbial (bacterial/fungal) action, which is the next step of decomposition (catabolism by decomposer enzymes). Detritivores therefore play a crucial role in initiating decomposition and nutrient recycling within an ecosystem.
