Decomposition is the process by which detritivores and decomposers break down complex organic matter into inorganic substances. The important steps are:

  1. Fragmentation — detritivores (e.g., earthworms) break down detritus into smaller particles, increasing the surface area available for microbial action.
  2. Leaching — water-soluble inorganic nutrients present in the detritus percolate down through the soil and get precipitated as unavailable salts in the lower soil horizon.
