Decomposition is the process by which detritus (dead remains of plants and animals, along with faecal matter) is broken down into simpler inorganic substances by decomposers. The major steps/processes involved are:
- Fragmentation: Detritivores (e.g., earthworms, and other soil organisms) feed on detritus and break it down into smaller particles through their feeding/digestive activity. This fragmentation greatly increases the surface area of the detritus particles, making them more accessible to microbial enzymatic action.
- Leaching: Water-soluble inorganic nutrients present in the detritus seep down through the soil and get precipitated as unavailable salts.
- Catabolism: Bacterial and fungal enzymes degrade the fragmented detritus into simpler inorganic substances through extracellular enzymatic breakdown — this is the chemical/microbial heart of decomposition.
- Humification: Leads to the accumulation of a dark-coloured, amorphous substance called humus, which is highly resistant to microbial action and decomposes very slowly; being colloidal, it acts as a reservoir of nutrients. …
