Productivity is the rate at which biomass is produced per unit area per unit time; primary productivity in particular depends on the photosynthetic capacity of the producers present and on environmental factors such as light, temperature, water, nutrients, and CO2 availability.

Productivity is defined as the rate of production of biomass (organic matter) per unit area over a period of time, expressed in units such as g m⁻² yr⁻¹ (grams per square metre per year) or kcal m⁻² yr⁻¹.

Factors affecting primary productivity:

  1. Plant species/community composition inhabiting a particular area — different species differ in their photosynthetic efficiency.
  2. Availability of nutrients in the soil or water body.
  3. Light intensity and duration — since photosynthesis is light-dependent.
  4. Temperature, which affects enzyme activity and metabolic rate. …
