Gross primary productivity is the total amount of organic matter fixed by producers through photosynthesis in a given time and area, and it depends on both the kind of vegetation present and the physical/environmental conditions of the habitat.

  1. Gross Primary Productivity (GPP): GPP is defined as the rate of production of organic matter (biomass) by producers (green plants, algae, etc.) during photosynthesis, per unit area, per unit time. A part of this fixed energy is used up by the plants themselves in respiration; what remains after subtracting respiratory loss is the Net Primary Productivity (NPP), i.e. GPP − Respiration (R) = NPP.
  2. Factors affecting primary productivity:
  • The plant/community species composition present in a given habitat.
  • Availability of nutrients (soil/water nutrient status).
  • Light intensity/duration (photosynthetically active radiation).
  • Temperature.
  • Availability of water/precipitation.
  • Availability of CO2. …
