GPP is the total rate of biomass/organic matter production by photosynthesis; NPP is what remains after producers use up part of it in respiration.

(a) Expansion:

  • GPP = Gross Primary Productivity — the total rate of production of organic matter (biomass) by producers through photosynthesis, per unit area, per unit time.
  • NPP = Net Primary Productivity — the biomass/organic matter left after producers use up a part of the GPP for their own respiration.
