Henry's Law relates the solubility of a gas in a liquid to its partial pressure above the liquid; it explains soda-bottle carbonation and decompression sickness in divers.

Statement of Henry's Law: At a constant temperature, the partial pressure (p) of a gas in the vapour phase is directly proportional to the mole fraction (x) of the gas dissolved in the solution.

p = KH · x

where KH is the Henry's law constant (different for every gas-solvent pair, and increases with temperature).

Applications:

  1. Carbonated (soft) drinks: To increase the solubility of CO2 in a soft drink or soda water, the bottle is sealed under high CO2 pressure. When the bottle is opened, the pressure drops to atmospheric, solubility falls sharply (per Henry's law), and the excess CO2 escapes as bubbles/fizz. …
