Henry's law states that the partial pressure of a gas over a solution is directly proportional to its mole fraction in the solution; it is widely applied in the bottling of carbonated beverages and in explaining the 'bends' in deep-sea diving.

Statement of Henry's law

At a constant temperature, the partial pressure (p) of a gas in the vapour phase is directly proportional to the mole fraction (x) of that gas dissolved in the solution:

p = KH × x

where KH is the Henry's law constant, which is different for every gas-solvent pair and increases with temperature.

Application

Henry's law is used in the bottling of carbonated drinks (soft drinks/soda): the beverage is bottled at high pressure of CO2 to increase its solubility in the drink; when the bottle is opened, the pressure drops and the dissolved CO2 escapes as bubbles/fizz.
