Henry's law relates the solubility of a gas in a liquid to the partial pressure of the gas above the solution: p = KH·x.

Henry's law: at a constant temperature, the partial pressure (p) of a gas in the vapour phase is directly proportional to the mole fraction (x) of that gas dissolved in the solution:

p = KH·x

where KH is the Henry's law constant, different for every gas-solvent pair and dependent on temperature. Different gases have different KH values in the same solvent at the same temperature - a higher KH means lower solubility at a given partial pressure.

Application:

  • Soft drinks and soda water are bottled under high pressure of CO2 to increase the solubility of CO2 in the drink; when the bottle is opened, the pressure drops and CO2 escapes as bubbles/fizz. …
