A transformer's core is laminated to cut eddy-current loss and made of a material with a narrow hysteresis loop to cut hysteresis loss; resonance in a series LCR circuit is the condition X_L = X_C, where impedance is minimum and current is maximum.

(a)(i) Core is laminated: the changing magnetic flux in the iron core also induces circulating eddy currents within the core itself, which dissipate energy as heat (I²R loss) and heat up the core, wasting energy. Laminating the core — building it from thin sheets electrically insulated from one another (instead of one solid block) — breaks up the paths available to these eddy currents, greatly increasing their effective resistance and so reducing the eddy-current loss (which would otherwise scale with the square of the lamina thickness).

(ii) Hysteresis loop is narrow: the area enclosed by the B–H hysteresis loop of the core material represents the energy dissipated as heat per unit volume per cycle of magnetization (hysteresis loss). Using a magnetically "soft" material with a narrow hysteresis loop (e.g. soft iron / silicon steel) keeps this loop area — and hence the hysteresis loss per cycle — small, improving the transformer's efficiency.
