A transformer works on mutual induction — an alternating current in the primary coil produces a changing flux in a common iron core, inducing an emf in the secondary; the turns ratio determines whether it steps voltage up or down.

  1. Principle: A transformer works on the principle of mutual induction: when the current in one coil (the primary) changes, the changing magnetic flux it produces links a second coil (the secondary) wound on the same core, inducing an emf in it.
  2. Working: A transformer consists of a primary coil of NpN_p turns and a secondary coil of NsN_s turns, both wound on a common laminated soft-iron core (laminating the core into thin, insulated sheets reduces energy losses due to eddy currents). When an alternating voltage VpV_p is applied to the primary, it drives an alternating current that sets up an alternating magnetic flux Φ\Phi in the core. Since the core links both coils, the same flux (assuming negligible flux leakage) passes through the secondary too, inducing an emf VsV_s in it, by Faraday's law: Vp=NpdΦdt,Vs=NsdΦdtV_p = N_p\dfrac{d\Phi}{dt}, \qquad V_s = N_s\dfrac{d\Phi}{dt} Dividing: VsVp=NsNp\dfrac{V_s}{V_p} = \dfrac{N_s}{N_p} For an ideal transformer (no losses), input power equals output power, VpIp=VsIsV_pI_p = V_sI_s, so: IsIp=NpNs=VpVs\dfrac{I_s}{I_p} = \dfrac{N_p}{N_s} = \dfrac{V_p}{V_s}
