A real transformer is not 100% efficient because of copper loss, hysteresis loss, eddy current loss, and flux leakage — all of which convert some input energy to heat or waste it, instead of transferring it to the secondary.

  1. Copper loss (I2RI^2R loss): The primary and secondary windings have some resistance, so current flowing through them dissipates power as heat (P=I2RP = I^2R) in both coils.
  2. Iron loss (hysteresis loss): The alternating magnetic flux repeatedly magnetises and demagnetises the iron core through a full hysteresis cycle every cycle of the AC supply; the area of the hysteresis loop represents energy dissipated as heat each cycle.
  3. Eddy current loss: The changing flux also induces circulating (eddy) currents within the bulk of the iron core itself, which dissipate energy as I2RI^2R heating inside the core. (This is why cores are laminated — to increase the resistance path for eddy currents and reduce this loss.) …
