Bohr's model rests on: quantized stationary orbits (no radiation while orbiting) with quantized angular momentum, and radiation only on transitions between orbits.

Niels Bohr proposed the following postulates for the hydrogen atom:

  1. Stationary orbits: The electron revolves around the nucleus only in certain allowed circular orbits, called stationary orbits, without radiating energy — even though it is accelerating (which classical electromagnetic theory would say should cause continuous energy loss).

  2. Quantization of angular momentum: Only those orbits are allowed for which the electron's orbital angular momentum is an integral multiple of h/2πh/2\pi:
