Bohr's model rescues the classical planetary picture of the atom from radiative collapse by postulating discrete, non-radiating orbits with quantised angular momentum, and photon emission/absorption only on transitions between them.

Niels Bohr combined Rutherford's nuclear model with quantum ideas via three postulates:

1. Postulate of stable (stationary) orbits: An electron in an atom can revolve around the nucleus only in certain special, allowed circular orbits, called stationary states or orbits, without radiating energy — contrary to classical electromagnetic theory, which predicts that an accelerating (orbiting) charge must continuously radiate energy and spiral into the nucleus.

2. Postulate of quantisation of angular momentum: The electron can revolve only in those orbits for which its orbital angular momentum is an integral multiple of h/2πh/2\pi:

mvr=nh2π,n=1,2,3,… (the principal quantum number)mvr = \dfrac{nh}{2\pi}, \qquad n = 1,2,3,\dots\ (\text{the principal quantum number})

where mm is the electron mass, vv its speed, and rr the orbit radius. This condition selects only a discrete set of allowed orbits (and hence energies) out of the continuum classical mechanics would allow.
