Drift velocity vd is the average velocity electrons acquire opposite to E under an applied field; current relates to it as I=nAvdeI = nAv_de.

Drift velocity

In a conductor, free electrons are in continuous random thermal motion (average velocity zero in the absence of a field). When an electric field E⃗\vec E is applied, each electron experiences a force −eE⃗-e\vec E and accelerates between collisions with the lattice ions, but loses this gained velocity at each collision. The result is a small net average velocity superimposed on the random motion, directed opposite to E⃗\vec E (since the electron charge is negative) — this is called the drift velocity, vdv_d.
