Drift velocity is the small net average velocity that free electrons acquire, superimposed on their random thermal motion, when an electric field is applied — given by vd=eEτ/mv_d = eE\tau/m.

Definition: In a conductor, free electrons are in continuous random thermal motion (with zero average velocity in the absence of a field). When an electric field EE is applied, each electron experiences a force and accelerates between collisions with the lattice ions, but loses this gained velocity at each collision. The result is a small net average velocity of the electrons, superimposed on the random motion, directed opposite to E⃗\vec{E} (since the electron charge is negative) — this is the drift velocity vdv_d.

Equation: Between two collisions (average time τ\tau, the relaxation time), an electron of charge −e-e and mass mm in field EE experiences acceleration a=eE/ma = eE/m. Averaging over many electrons (with average time since the last collision =τ=\tau): …
