Threshold frequency is the cut-off below which no photoemission occurs; stopping potential increases linearly with frequency above this cut-off.

  1. Threshold frequency: For a given photosensitive metal, photoelectric emission occurs only if the frequency ν of the incident light is greater than or equal to a certain minimum value, called the threshold frequency ν0\nu_0, which is characteristic of that metal. Below ν0\nu_0, no photoelectrons are emitted at all, however high the intensity of the light — because a single photon of energy hνh\nu must exceed the metal's work function ϕ0=hν0\phi_0 = h\nu_0 to eject an electron; increasing intensity below threshold only increases the number of (still-too-weak) photons per second, not their individual energy.
  2. Graph of stopping potential V₀ vs frequency ν: From Einstein's photoelectric equation, eV0=hν−ϕ0eV_0 = h\nu - \phi_0, so V0=heν−ϕ0eV_0 = \dfrac{h}{e}\nu - \dfrac{\phi_0}{e}. This is a straight line: …
