Stopping potential is the minimum reverse voltage needed to bring the photoelectric current down to zero, and directly measures the maximum kinetic energy of the emitted photoelectrons.

In the photoelectric effect, when light of suitable frequency falls on a metal surface (cathode), electrons are emitted with a range of kinetic energies up to a maximum value KEmaxKE_{max}. If a variable retarding (negative) potential VV is applied to the collector plate relative to the emitter, it opposes the motion of the photoelectrons.

As VV is made more negative, the photoelectric current decreases, and at a particular value V=V0V=V_0, called the stopping potential, the current becomes exactly zero — this is the minimum retarding potential that is just able to stop even the most energetic photoelectrons from reaching the collector.

Since the work done by the retarding field on the fastest electron equals its maximum kinetic energy: …
