The work function is the minimum energy an electron at the surface of a metal needs to escape the metal entirely; it sets the threshold frequency for the photoelectric effect.

Free electrons inside a metal are held within it by the attractive forces of the positive ions in the metallic lattice; at ordinary temperatures they cannot escape on their own. To remove an electron from the metal surface, some minimum amount of energy must be supplied to overcome this binding — this minimum energy is called the work function, denoted ϕ0\phi_0 (or W0W_0). It is a characteristic property of the metal and depends on its surface properties.

Work function is usually expressed in electron-volts (eV) — e.g. caesium ≈ 2.14 eV, platinum ≈ 5.65 eV. Metals with a lower work function are easier to photoemit electrons from.
