Equipotential surfaces have constant potential everywhere on them, no work is needed to move a charge along one, and for a uniform field they are equally-spaced parallel planes perpendicular to the field direction.

  1. Equipotential surface: A surface (real or imaginary) on which the electric potential VV has the same value at every point. Since the change in VV along the surface is zero, the electric field is always perpendicular to an equipotential surface (as E=−dV/drE = -dV/dr).
  2. Work done moving a charge on the surface: Work done W=q(VB−VA)W = q(V_B - V_A). Since every point on an equipotential surface is at the same potential, VA=VBV_A = V_B, so: W=q(VA−VA)=0W = q(V_A - V_A) = 0 …
