An equipotential surface is a surface of constant potential; no work is done moving a charge along it, and the electric field is always perpendicular to it. A simple example is a sphere centred on an isolated point charge.

Definition: An equipotential surface is a surface (real or imaginary) on which the electrostatic potential VV has the same value at every point.

Properties (that follow from the definition):

  • Since VV doesn't change along the surface, no work is done in moving a test charge from one point to another on the same equipotential surface: W=q0(VA−VB)=0W = q_0(V_A-V_B) = 0.
  • The electric field is always perpendicular to an equipotential surface at every point — if it had any component along the surface, moving a charge along that component would require/release work, contradicting VV being constant on the surface.
  • Two equipotential surfaces can never intersect (a point cannot have two different potentials at once). …
