Equipotential surfaces have three key properties: no work is done moving charge along them, the field is always normal to them, and they never intersect.

An equipotential surface is a surface on which the electric potential is the same at every point.

  1. No work is done in moving a test charge on an equipotential surface. Since potential is the same everywhere on the surface, W=q(VA−VB)=0W = q(V_A - V_B) = 0 for any two points A, B on that surface.

  2. The electric field at any point on the surface is always perpendicular (normal) to the surface. If the field had a component along the surface, it would do work in moving a charge along the surface, contradicting property 1.
