The 'Evil Quartet' names the four main causes of present-day biodiversity loss — habitat loss & fragmentation, over-exploitation, alien species invasion, and co-extinction — and co-extinction specifically means one species dying out because a species it depended upon has already gone extinct.

Edward O. Wilson termed the four major causes of the ongoing loss of biodiversity the 'Evil Quartet':

  1. Habitat loss and fragmentation — the single most important cause; large habitats are broken into small fragments by human activities (deforestation, agriculture, urbanisation, dam-building, etc.), reducing the area available to species and isolating their populations. This block corresponds to A in the diagram.
  2. Over-exploitation — species that were once only 'naturally' harvested become over-hunted/over-harvested by humans, driving them to extinction (e.g. Steller's sea cow, passenger pigeon).
  3. Alien species invasions — when alien/exotic species are introduced (deliberately or accidentally) into a habitat, they can out-compete, prey upon, or bring new diseases to native species, driving natives to decline or extinction (e.g. the Nile perch in Lake Victoria wiping out several native cichlid fish species). This block corresponds to B in the diagram. …
