The major causes of biodiversity loss are often called the 'Evil Quartet' — habitat loss & fragmentation, over-exploitation, invasion by alien species, and co-extinction. Biodiversity is conserved either in-situ (protecting species in their natural habitat, e.g. national parks) or ex-situ (outside the natural habitat, e.g. seed banks and zoos).

(a) Four major causes of biodiversity loss:

  1. Habitat loss and fragmentation — destruction of forests, wetlands and other habitats (e.g., for agriculture, urbanisation) is the single most important cause; fragmentation further isolates populations, making them more vulnerable.
  2. Over-exploitation — excessive hunting, fishing or harvesting of species for human use, driving many once-abundant species to extinction (e.g., Steller's sea cow, passenger pigeon).
  3. Alien species invasion — the introduction of non-native species (accidentally or deliberately) can outcompete, predate upon, or introduce diseases to native species, causing their decline or extinction.
  4. Co-extinction — when a species goes extinct, other species intimately associated with it in an obligatory relationship (e.g., a host-specific parasite, or a plant and its sole pollinator) may also become extinct.

(b) Conservation strategies: …
