The four major, human-driven causes of biodiversity loss are collectively called the 'Evil Quartet', and biodiversity is conserved through two broad complementary approaches — protecting species in their natural habitat (in-situ) and outside it (ex-situ).

(a) The Evil Quartet — four major causes of biodiversity loss:

  1. Habitat loss and fragmentation: the single most important cause — destruction of tropical rainforests and other habitats for agriculture, settlements, industry, etc., and breaking up of large habitats into small, isolated fragments, e.g. the Amazon rainforest being cut for soya bean cultivation and cattle ranching.
  2. Over-exploitation: over-harvesting of natural resources (species hunted/fished beyond their capacity to recover) has driven many species (such as Steller's sea cow and the passenger pigeon) to extinction, and continues to threaten many marine fish populations today.
  3. Alien species invasion: unintentional or intentional introduction of exotic/alien species can cause the decline or extinction of indigenous species, e.g. the Nile perch introduced into Lake Victoria led to the extinction of several native cichlid fish species; the water hyacinth choking Indian water bodies is another example.
  4. Co-extinction: when a species goes extinct, the plant and animal species associated with it in an obligatory way (e.g. a specific host-parasite or plant-pollinator relationship) also become extinct. …
