Amniocentesis is a prenatal diagnostic test based on foetal cells/chemicals in amniotic fluid; it is banned for sex-determination purposes in India because of rampant misuse leading to female foeticide.

(a) Amniocentesis is a foetal genetic diagnostic technique in which a small sample of the amniotic fluid surrounding the developing foetus (which contains foetal cells and chemical substances) is withdrawn and analysed. Because of chromosomal/biochemical differences related to the sex chromosomes, this test can reveal the sex of the foetus, along with certain genetic/chromosomal disorders.
