Green Revolution: HYV-seed-led rise in foodgrain output; done to end food shortage; benefited farmers with higher yields, incomes and surplus.

What it is: The Green Revolution refers to the large increase in the production of foodgrains (especially wheat and rice) in India from the mid-1960s, achieved through the use of high-yielding variety (HYV) seeds, chemical fertilisers, assured irrigation, pesticides and modern machinery.

Why it was implemented: India faced an acute shortage of foodgrains and had to import food and depend on foreign aid (PL-480). The Green Revolution was undertaken to make the country self-sufficient in foodgrains and to overcome this food crisis.

How it benefited farmers:
