The Green Revolution refers to the substantial increase in the production of foodgrains (especially wheat and rice) that resulted from the use of High-Yielding Variety (HYV) seeds, particularly from the mid-1960s. The HYV seeds were used along with chemical fertilisers, pesticides and assured irrigation, and greatly raised the productivity of land. It made India self-sufficient in foodgrains.
