The Eye: A Camera You're Born With

Think about what a camera needs to take a picture. It needs a dark box, a lens to focus light, a hole to let light in, and a screen to capture the image. Your eye works on exactly the same principle — it's a biological camera that has been refined over millions of years.

The goal is simple: light from the world outside enters your eye, gets bent (refracted) to a sharp focus, and lands on a light-sensitive screen at the back. That screen then sends electrical signals to your brain, which does the actual "seeing."

The Three Layers: Like an Onion

The wall of the eyeball is made of three concentric layers, each with a distinct job.

Outermost layer — the tough coat. The white part you see is the sclera (SKLEH-ruh). It's tough, fibrous, and gives the eye its shape — like the hard shell of a football. At the front, the sclera becomes transparent and bulges out slightly. This clear window is the cornea. The cornea does about two-thirds of all the focusing of light. It's curved, so it bends incoming rays strongly.

Middle layer — the blood supply and the iris. This is the choroid (KOR-oyd). It's rich in blood vessels that nourish the retina. At the front, the choroid thickens into the ciliary body (which we'll come back to) and the iris — the coloured part of your eye. The iris is a muscular diaphragm. It has a hole in the centre: the pupil. In bright light, the iris contracts, making the pupil smaller to limit how much light enters. In dim light, it relaxes, opening the pupil wide.

Innermost layer — the screen. This is the retina. It's a thin, delicate sheet of nerve tissue lining the back two-thirds of the eye. The retina contains two types of light-sensitive cells: rods (for dim light, black-and-white vision) and cones (for bright light and colour). When light hits these cells, they trigger nerve impulses that travel along the optic nerve to the brain.

The Lens and the Chambers

Behind the pupil sits the crystalline lens. It's a transparent, flexible, biconvex structure held in place by tiny suspensory ligaments attached to the ciliary body. Unlike the cornea (which has fixed curvature), the lens can change shape. This is accommodation — the ability to focus on near and far objects.

When you look at something far away, the ciliary muscles relax, pulling the lens flat (less curved, lower power). When you look at something close, the ciliary muscles contract, releasing tension, and the lens bulges into a more rounded shape (more curved, higher power). This is why your eyes feel tired after reading for a long time — those ciliary muscles have been working hard.

The aqueous humour is a watery fluid that is constantly produced and drained. If drainage gets blocked, pressure builds up — that's glaucoma, a serious condition that can damage the optic nerve.
