Hund's rule: electrons occupy degenerate orbitals singly, with parallel spins, before pairing up in any one orbital — pairing happens only after each orbital of that sub-shell already has one electron.

Within a given sub-shell (such as the three 2p orbitals, or the five 3d orbitals), all orbitals have exactly the same energy — they are said to be degenerate. Hund's rule of maximum multiplicity states that electrons fill such degenerate orbitals one at a time, each with parallel (unpaired) spin, before any orbital receives a second electron. This arrangement minimises electron-electron repulsion and gives the atom the maximum possible number of unpaired electrons (maximum spin multiplicity), which is also the lowest-energy, most stable configuration.
