Hund's rule maximizes the number of unpaired electrons with parallel spins in degenerate orbitals, which corresponds to the maximum spin multiplicity (2S+1) — hence its name.

Hund's rule of maximum multiplicity states: electron pairing in the degenerate orbitals of a given subshell (e.g. the three 2p orbitals, or the five 3d orbitals) does not take place until each orbital in that subshell is singly occupied by one electron, and all these unpaired electrons have parallel spins.

Spin multiplicity is defined as (2S+1), where S is the total spin quantum number (sum of the individual electron spins, each +-1/2). The more unpaired electrons with parallel spin a configuration has, the larger S is, and hence the larger the multiplicity (2S+1).
