Hund's rule: degenerate orbitals are singly filled with parallel spins before any pairing occurs.

Hund's rule of maximum multiplicity: Electron pairing in the orbitals belonging to the same subshell (degenerate orbitals, e.g. the three pp orbitals or five dd orbitals) does not take place until each orbital of that subshell is singly occupied. These singly-occupying electrons have parallel spins (same spin quantum number), which maximizes the total spin multiplicity of the atom, giving it extra stability.
