The scrotal (extra-abdominal) position of the testes keeps them cooler than body core temperature, which is essential for normal sperm production; alternatively, MTP is the legally permitted induced termination of an unwanted or medically necessary pregnancy.

Why the testes lie outside the abdominal cavity: The testes are housed in the scrotum, a pouch that hangs outside the abdominal cavity. Spermatogenesis (sperm formation) in the seminiferous tubules is a temperature-sensitive process and proceeds normally only at a temperature about 2–2.5 °C lower than the normal internal body temperature (37 °C). The scrotum's position outside the body, along with its ability to contract/relax (via the cremaster and dartos muscles) to regulate proximity to the body, maintains this cooler testicular temperature. If the testes remain undescended inside the abdomen (a condition called cryptorchidism), sperm production is impaired, leading to infertility.
