Although credit co-operative societies are valuable, they suffer from several limitations. Four important ones are:

  1. Limited resources (shortage of capital) — Because members are people of small means, the funds they contribute are limited. Many societies therefore cannot meet the full credit needs of members and depend heavily on higher co-operative banks and government help.
  2. Overdues and defaults — When members fail to repay loans on time, fresh lending dries up and the society's survival is threatened. This is the most serious and chronic problem of credit societies, often worsened by political interference and loan-waiver expectations.
  3. Untrained, honorary management — Committees are elected from among ordinary members who may lack the training, book-keeping skill and experience needed to run a financial body, which can lead to poor decisions and mismanagement.
  4. Excessive government interference and dependence — While state support is necessary, too much official control and reliance on government funds weakens the self-help spirit and members' own initiative. …
