The International Co-operative Alliance (ICA), in its 1995 statement on the co-operative identity, lays down seven principles of co-operation. In order, they are:

  1. Voluntary and Open Membership — co-operatives are voluntary bodies open to all eligible persons without discrimination.
  2. Democratic Member Control — members control the society democratically on the basis of one member, one vote.
  3. Member Economic Participation — members equitably contribute to and democratically control the capital; return on capital is limited and surplus is used as members decide.
  4. Autonomy and Independence — co-operatives are self-help organisations controlled by their members, retaining member control even when accepting outside capital or support.
  5. Education, Training and Information — co-operatives educate their members, representatives, managers and employees, and inform the public about co-operation.
  6. Co-operation among Co-operatives — co-operatives work together through local, regional, national and international structures.
  7. Concern for Community — while serving members, co-operatives work for the sustainable development of their community through member-approved policies. …
