Administrative structure. For administration, Maharashtra is organised as a hierarchy:

  1. Six revenue divisions, each under a Divisional Commissioner:
    • Konkan (coastal belt, headquartered at Mumbai — contains Mumbai and the state's coastline);
    • Pune (Western Maharashtra);
    • Nashik (northern/Khandesh region);
    • Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar (Aurangabad) (Marathwada);
    • Amravati (western Vidarbha); and
    • Nagpur (eastern Vidarbha).
  2. Districts (about three dozen), each under a District Collector.
  3. Talukas (tehsils), and then
  4. Villages — the smallest unit, where most economic activity in a still-largely-rural state takes place.

Local self-government runs in parallel: Zilla Parishads (district), Panchayat Samitis (block/taluka) and Gram Panchayats (village) in rural areas, and Municipal Corporations and Councils in urban areas.
