Step 1 — Recall observed OO and expected EE. From Worked Examples 4:

CellOOEEO−EO - E(O−E)2(O-E)^2(O−E)2/E(O-E)^2 / E
Male, Liked302552525/25=125/25 = 1
Male, Disliked2025−52525/25=125/25 = 1
Female, Liked2025−52525/25=125/25 = 1
Female, Disliked302552525/25=125/25 = 1
Total4

Step 2 — Add the last column.

χ2=∑(O−E)2E=1+1+1+1=4\chi^2 = \sum \dfrac{(O-E)^2}{E} = 1 + 1 + 1 + 1 = 4

Step 3 — Interpret. Since χ2=4>0\chi^2 = 4 > 0, the observed table departs from what independence would predict, so there is some association between sex and product preference — men leaned towards 'Liked' while women leaned towards 'Disliked'. (Whether this association is large enough to be declared statistically significant would need a formal test using degrees of freedom, which is beyond this chapter's scope.) …
