4. Importance of Management

Management matters to every organisation for several concrete reasons:

  1. Achieving group goals — management channels the scattered individual efforts of many people toward the organisation's common, shared goals, converting individual effort into a coordinated group result.
  2. Optimum utilisation of resources — management ensures that limited resources (money, materials, machinery, people, time) are used to their best possible effect, avoiding both waste and idle capacity.
  3. Reducing costs — by planning work carefully and using resources efficiently, management helps minimise the cost of producing a given output, which in turn helps the organisation stay price-competitive.
  4. Establishing a sound organisation — management builds a clear structure of authority and responsibility (who reports to whom, who is responsible for what) so that work does not overlap, get duplicated, or fall through the gaps.
