Introduction to Management — why this chapter exists

Every organisation, whatever it produces or sells, needs someone to decide what to do, arrange the people and resources to do it, and see that it actually gets done well. That job is Management, and this chapter is Std XI OCM's first, foundational look at it — what management IS, why every organisation needs it, who does it at different levels, and a short roadmap of what management actually DOES day to day.

This is deliberately an introductory chapter. Two topics you will hear mentioned here — the Principles of Management and the detailed Functions of Management (Planning, Organising, Staffing, Directing, Controlling, Co-ordinating) — are each given a full, dedicated chapter of their own in Std XII OCM. Here you get only a short preview of the functions, enough to see the shape of the subject; the real depth comes next year. MSBSHSE's OCM syllabus, in introducing management this way, draws on the same foundational management principles that CBSE/NCERT Business Studies also teaches at this stage.

This chapter covers, in order: the meaning and definition of management; its key characteristics; the long-running debate on whether management is a science, an art, or a profession; why management matters to any organisation; the three levels at which management operates; a brief preview of what management actually does; and, finally, how "administration" and "management" are usually distinguished.
