A growing root tip shows five successive regions. The root cap covers and protects the tip, secretes mucilage to lubricate the root's passage through soil, and carries starch granules that help the root sense gravity; it is usually single, though Pandanus has multiple caps and hydrophytes like Pistia/Eichhornia replace it with a root pocket. Just beneath the cap is the meristematic region (region of cell division), about 1 mm long, made of actively dividing cells that drive the root's lengthwise growth. Above it lies the region of elongation, where newly formed cells expand rapidly, increasing root length and helping absorb mineral salts.
