The digestive system of the cockroach is made up of the mouthparts, a long (6–7 cm) alimentary canal, and a pair of salivary glands.

Step 1. Mouth. The mouth (pre-oral chamber) is bounded by the mouthparts; the hypopharynx sits at its centre with the salivary duct opening at its base, so saliva mixes with food as it enters. The mouth leads into the fore-gut.

Step 2. Fore-gut (stomodaeum). This has the pharynx (short, muscular, with taste sensillae), the oesophagus (a narrow connecting tube), the crop (a large pear-shaped sac that temporarily stores food) and the gizzard/proventriculus (a small muscular organ with six chitinous teeth that grind food and bristles that filter it).

Step 3. Mid-gut (mesenteron). This has the stomach/ventriculus (glandular, secreting digestive enzymes — the main site of digestion and absorption) and the hepatic caecae (blind tubules that also secrete digestive enzymes).

Step 4. Hind-gut (proctodaeum). This has the ileum (short; receives the Malpighian tubules near the mid-/hind-gut junction), the colon (longer, reabsorbs water from the waste) and the rectum (with six rectal pads for further water absorption), opening to the outside via the anus on the tenth abdominal segment. …
