The digestive system consists of the mouthparts, the alimentary canal (a 6–7 cm tube of varying diameter, mouth to anus) and a pair of salivary glands.

Step 1. Mouth and salivary glands. The mouth is bounded by the mouthparts, with the hypopharynx at its centre where the salivary duct opens (from a pair of glands, each with glandular lobules that secrete saliva and a reservoir that stores it, both ducts uniting into one common efferent salivary duct).

Step 2. Fore-gut. Pharynx (short, muscular) → oesophagus (narrow tube) → crop (large sac, temporary food storage) → gizzard (small, muscular, six chitinous teeth for grinding, bristles for filtering).

Step 3. Mid-gut. Stomach/ventriculus (glandular, secretes digestive enzymes — main site of digestion and absorption) plus hepatic caecae (blind tubules, also enzyme-secreting).

Step 4. Hind-gut. Ileum (short; Malpighian tubules open here) → colon (longer, reabsorbs water) → rectum (six rectal pads reabsorb further water) → anus (on the 10th abdominal segment, ventral side), which releases the undigested food. …
