TLC is a form of Adsorption Chromatography, working by differential adsorption onto a solid; Paper Chromatography is a form of Partition Chromatography, working by differential partitioning between two liquids.
Step 2. Stationary phase. TLC's stationary phase is a thin (about 0.2 mm) layer of silica gel or alumina spread over a glass plate (the chromplate). Paper Chromatography's stationary phase is the water trapped within the fibres of a special Whatman No. 1 paper — a liquid, not a solid.
Step 3. Common procedure. Both techniques spot the sample mixture about 2 cm from one end of the plate/paper, then develop it standing in a closed jar/chamber containing the mobile phase, with the spot kept above the liquid's level so the rising mobile phase (by capillary action) carries the components upward at different rates. …
