Total internal reflection is possible only under two joint conditions: (i) light must be travelling from a DENSER medium toward a RARER one (never the reverse direction); and (ii) the angle of incidence in the denser medium must be AT OR BEYOND the critical angle for that pair of media. Below the critical angle, refraction (with partial reflection) occurs as usual; at or beyond it, the beam reflects entirely back into the denser medium with zero refraction. A suitable example: in an optical fibre, light travelling inside the denser CORE strikes the core-cladding boundary (cladding being the optically rarer surrounding layer) at an angle exceeding the critical angle for that core-cladding pair, so it reflects totally back into the core at every bounce, letting the signal travel long distances with very little loss. The CRITICAL ANGLE ic for a given pair of media is defined as that particular angle of incidence in the denser medium for which the angle of refraction in the rarer medium comes out to exactly 90 degrees (grazing emergence). Applying Snell's law at exactly this angle, with mu the denser medium's …
