Conduction
Conduction is the process by which heat flows from the hot end to the cold end of a solid body WITHOUT any net bulk movement of the body's own particles. If one end of a metal rod is held in a flame while the other end is held in your hand, the held end slowly warms up even though it never touches the flame directly -- heat has been conducted along the rod. At the molecular level, particles at the heated end vibrate faster; through repeated collisions, they pass on some of that extra energy to their slower-moving neighbours, who in turn pass it further down the rod, all without any of the particles actually leaving their mean positions. …
