Section 65 of the MCS Act, 1960 requires every society to keep proper books of account and records, correct and up to date. Four important ones are:

  1. Cash Book — records all cash and bank receipts and payments, entered day by day.
  2. General Ledger and Personal Ledger — the general ledger holds the impersonal (asset, liability, income and expense) accounts, while the personal ledger holds the individual accounts of members, depositors and borrowers.
  3. Register of Members — shows the name, address and shareholding of every member and is the basis for deciding who may vote.
